This
was originally the cemetery chapel / or charnel house
/ which the gentry of Kosice had built to the south
of the parish church in the later 14th century. They
located it in the middle of the town cemetery, and the
chapež s consecration to St. Michael the Archangel was
connected with this he was meant to weigh the souls
facing the Last Judgement in order to determine which
ones belonged in heaven and which in hell.
Apart
from funeral services and requiem masses, the chapel
was also important for its underground part, where the
remains of bones taken from the cemetery´s oldest graves
were regularly placed in order to create new burial
places outside.
